Introduction
Over the last year or so I have had some ‘interesting’ discussions with various brothers and sisters in Christ on the topic of climate change. They have insisted to me that the global warming, that we are currently experiencing, is just another example of the cyclic climate changes this planet of ours regularly experiences. This attitude has surprised me, since my own view is diametrically opposed to this opinion based on the scientific knowledge that is available to us.
Also, an insistence that climate change is a natural and cyclic event effectively blames God for the severe weather conditions we are now experiencing and the probable ensuing demise of our home planet and our species. This seems a strange position to adopt for a committed Christian I feel. Given the difference of opinion on such an important issue, I thought that I should delve into the Scriptures to see what the Good Book had to say on this topic. Perhaps this would be a more effective way of determining the truth of the matter. But first let us re-examine the scientific climatological evidence.
Arguments For the Natural v Man-Made Cause of Earth’s Current Climate Change
A key point in the scientific evidence for me is the level of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the Earth’s atmosphere. The role in climate of CO₂ is that it is a major greenhouse gas, trapping heat and contributing to global warming. Below I precis an email dialogue that I had with one of my brothers in Christ. This started with a factual statement about those levels through time.
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) currently makes up approximately 0.0427% of Earth’s atmosphere by volume, or 427 parts per million (ppm) as of 2024. This is a significant increase from pre-industrial levels of about 280 ppm. The following website pretty much agrees with the above statement: https://earth.org/data_visualization/a-brief-history-of-co2/. So, since the Industrial Revolution, we have an increase of approximately 50% in the concentration of atmospheric CO₂. Looking at the graph provided near the top of that article we are looking at an average annual growth rate of 2.1 ppm per year, over the period from 1985 to 2020 primarily due to a combination of fossil fuel combustion and deforestation.
My Christian friend argued that, although humans are adding CO₂ to the atmosphere, it was too small an increase to make any climatic difference at 0.0427%. I strongly disagreed on this point. The fact that the number is small is not relevant. The increase is 50% over the period stated and you can see from the graph in the following link the difference that this has made to the planet’s mean temperature. The rise is more than 1.5 degrees Centigrade which is certainly not insignificant: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd7575x8yq5o.
My friend conceded that we have increased CO₂ by 50% since the industrial revolution but then went on to mention that volcanoes release tonnes of CO₂ contributing to the rise. My response was that the following link demonstrates that volcano emissions of CO₂ are irrelevant in terms of global warming compared with that produced by human activities: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/climate-qa/which-emits-more-carbon-dioxide-volcanoes-or-human-activities.
The next point for debate was related to the optimal level of CO₂ for plant life. Apparently, the optimal CO₂ concentration for most greenhouse-grown plants is between 800 and 1,200 ppm—roughly 2 to 3 times higher than current outdoor atmospheric levels. This range significantly boosts photosynthesis and plant growth under controlled conditions. So, the argument went that it is better for plants to have more CO₂. While the following webpage certainly supports this view, I would not necessarily take many other aspects contained within it as ‘Gospel’. However, in the interests of trying to reach the truth of the matter I have included the link: https://ilki.substack.com/p/optimum-co2-for-plants.
I agree that, whilst plant life does take up more CO₂, it still leaves 44% of manmade emissions in the atmosphere and it only partially provides a carbon sink resulting in a 4% imbalance between manmade emissions and what our planet can absorb. Also, at the rate of mankind’s deforestation of the planet this will likely only get worse. This link has a good balance on this aspect: https://theconversation.com/yes-more-carbon-dioxide-in-the-atmosphere-helps-plants-grow-but-its-no-excuse-to-downplay-climate-change-130603.
The next point of debate related to whether the planet had ever had high CO₂ levels in the past. The argument runs that yes, the Earth has experienced much higher CO₂ levels in the past—up to 10–20 times today's concentration—especially during warm "greenhouse" periods like the Mesozoic Era and early Cenozoic. However, these high levels were accompanied by drastically different climates, sea levels, and ecosystems. So, we raise it 0.02% and it is devastating but it has been 20 times higher than it is now and life thrived. There were plenty of animals during Earth's high-CO₂ periods—many of them thrived in those warm, lush environments.
My response to this was that what is important is the rate of increase in CO₂ levels. The following website demonstrates that over the last 800K years there were 8 natural temperature cycles. It also demonstrates that the current rate of increase in the rate of rise of atmospheric CO₂ is nothing short of meteoric compared to the previous peaks: https://science.nasa.gov/climate-change/evidence/. I do not think that anyone, without a petrochemical agenda, can realistically deny that it is man’s influence on the environment that is causing this dramatic rise. Yes, going back millions of years, there have been periods where CO₂ levels were much higher than today’s current levels. However, and this is really the key point, today's mammalian lifeforms did not exist until much more temperate conditions prevailed: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/instance/1692178/pdf/9507562.pdf. Also check out: https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2022/09/20/you-asked-dinosaurs-survived-when-co2-was-extremely-high-why-cant-humans/.
Going back to the warm "greenhouse" periods my friend asked, ‘What caused there to be so much CO₂ if we were not there to burn fossil fuels?’ I think this is difficult to say since the geological record needs significant analysis and reconstruction to make an accurate assessment. The main natural contributors today are animal and plant respiration, animal and plant decomposition, soil respiration, ocean outgassing, volcanic activity and wildfires. An interesting webpage identifying the natural causes of CO₂ creation and their opposing carbon sinks can be found at https://www.britannica.com/science/global-warming/Carbon-dioxide.
I believe the attendant high temperatures in ancient times would have caused many of these processes to increase substantially over their current day equivalents. A recent paper makes a more accurate assessment of the causes, the main one being major tectonic events, the like of which we have not seen in the last 800k years: https://www.livescience.com/44330-jurassic-dinosaur-carbon-dioxide.html.
To round up this section, I have looked at several other websites on the subject, all of which fully support my view that it is mankind which is causing the current rapid increase in CO₂ levels in the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels. Typical of those are: https://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/climate-change-atmospheric-carbon-dioxide and https://www.ucs.org/resources/are-humans-major-cause-global-warming.
There are certainly those detractors of the view that global warming is a man-made phenomenon and that what we are currently experiencing is just the natural cycle of climate change that the earth goes through every few millennia. However, from the evidence I see, there is an enormous amount of geological measurements that have been taken from numerous sources that demonstrate, to my satisfaction, that mankind is, indeed, contributing to the current global warming part of the cycle. Looking at the evidence for global temperature change and atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, there is no doubt that the current peak in these figures is more than double all the previous peaks measured over the last 800,000 years.
The Uncertainties
As is my want, I always like to play devil’s advocate; not literally I might add (LOL). So, I thought I would look at the evidence that might point towards global warming being a natural rather than a man-made phenomenon. I do this since in all things, if you do not know your adversary, you may well lose the battle/argument even if you are in the right.
Well, I am rather glad that I made this call; the results were somewhat disarming. Check this link out for starters: https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/climate-change/earths-energy-imbalance-is-much-more-extreme-than-climate-models-show-but-scientists-arent-sure-why. According to this article, it appears that the heat radiated out from the Earth has been rather less than that absorbed from our sun over the last couple of decades or so. Although the reduced use of aerosols over that period seems to be partly responsible for this effect, it is by no means certain to be the case. This reduced reflectivity of the sun’s radiation is allegedly largely to blame for the recent rise in global warming. To my mind this starts to cast some doubt on the full effects of greenhouse gases in this regard.
The following detailed research paper throws more significant evidence of this phenomenon of the Earth’s 'albedo', as its reflectivity is referred to: https://www.mdpi.com/2673-7418/4/3/17. This paper goes as far as to determine that the Earth’s decreased albedo is wholly responsible for the increase in global warming over recent decades. From this, it is unclear to me as to the underlying cause of this being man-made or cyclical or a combination of both. What it does show to my mind, is that climatology is a science in its infancy and that, like most activities of man, demonstrates that we know very little about the real nature and causes of our climate. This well compares to our cosmologists who readily acknowledge that they do not know what 96% of our universe is made of (https://www.space.com/11642-dark-matter-dark-energy-4-percent-universe-panek.html and A Brief History of Darkness).
The more I dig into this discussion, the more confusing does it become. Now here we have a perfectly plausible position that it is global warming that is causing the rise in atmospheric CO₂ rather than the other way around: https://wattsupwiththat.com/2024/11/02/the-geological-record-of-climate-change-and-why-todays-increase-in-atmospheric-co2-is-the-result-of-global-warming-not-the-cause/. The argument goes that the rise in global temperatures is causing the CO₂ in the oceans to to evaporate out into the atmosphere thereby causing the measured increase in atmospheric CO₂. As believable as the author's argumentation goes, I found myself asking: 'Why then are we losing oceanic coral reefs? Answer: Whilst ocean warming is a factor, another one is the increasing acidity of sea water. That acidity can only realistically come from increased levels of CO₂ in the oceans thereby disproving this otherwise credible narrative: https://populationeducation.org/what-is-causing-coral-reef-destruction-and-how-can-we-stop-it/. Now I am really beginning to understand why we have these diametrically opposed views as to the cause of the current global warming profile; cause and effect are clearly at issue here.
Well, just when you thought things were getting really confusing, get a load of this: https://www.scirp.org/journal/paperinformation?paperid=131993. Here we are being told that global temperature rises over millennia are totally unrelated to CO₂ levels. So, CO₂ is not a greenhouse gas??? Well, it seems that may well be the case: https://maweb.org/why-co2-is-not-a-greenhouse-gas/. When I go back to consider my original arguments for global warming being related to recently increased levels of CO₂ in the atmosphere, it was entirely a matter of correlating the data. It was not based on fundamental scientific causation. This correlation seems to be that adopted by most so-called climatologists but would appear to have nothing to do with real science!
So, what do we glean from this? First off, it is arguable that the burning of fossil fuels is not a major contributor to global warming. If that is the case then I do not understand why the petrochemical industry does not make a major claim on this point to counter the green energy debate. Any suggestions? Read on.
It seems that water vapour in the atmosphere is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. However, water vapour is short-lived in the Earth’s atmosphere so in itself it cannot be directly attributed to be a cause of the current raising of global temperatures. However, as global temperatures are rising then so will the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere. So, water vapour is the not the cause of the rise in global temperatures but will be contributing to it as an amplifying factor: https://climate.mit.edu/ask-mit/why-do-we-blame-climate-change-carbon-dioxide-when-water-vapor-much-more-common-greenhouse.
Agriculture
It appears that methane and nitrous oxide are clearly much more effective greenhouse gases than CO₂: https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/science/climate-issues/methane and https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210603-nitrous-oxide-the-worlds-forgotten-greenhouse-gas. In reviewing the main sources of methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere, a substantial quantity comes from the petrochemical industry’s processes so that may well explain its silence on global warming. Methane and nitrous oxide are both also products of intensive farming, much of which relates to the rearing of livestock together with dairy and rice produce and making crop production more efficient to feed the world’s increasing population.
As far as agriculture goes, it might be a point of contention as to whether this is due to a purely man-made causation. One might consider that God had a hand in this since one might make the claim that God only made the Earth habitable by a certain number of humans, which number we have currently exceeded. Counter to that, I am certain that man could devise more ecologically sound ways of managing his global food supply if it was not solely driven by profit.
In looking at this, I studied the relevant scriptures of God’s input to the human diet which research you can view in my Scriptural Diversion section below. Bottom line though is that it does not seem to matter, in the context of global warming, whether humans stuck to a vegetarian or meat-eating diet.
Ozone
Well, one would have to be slightly amused in considering the effect of ozone on global warming. The ozone layer is in place in the upper atmosphere (stratosphere) to protect us from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. What a nice touch by our God to provide us with His protective shield! Human use of aerosols containing chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been destroying the ozone layer through chemically reacting with the ozone. This has been bad for the creation of an ozone hole that allows more UV radiation to hit the Earth’s surface thereby causing a risk to biological lifeforms. Consequently, over recent decades, there has been an edict in place, on a global scale, to ban the use of CFCs in aerosols. This ban has been successful in helping the ozone layer to be rebuilt thereby increasing the protection from harmful UV rays down on the surface of the Earth.
This is great news except that, guess what, ozone is a very powerful greenhouse gas since it absorbs infrared radiation. So, a completed ozone layer will contribute heavily to further global warming in the stratosphere.
A further impact from ozone is in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) where it appears that exhaust fumes from vehicles and factories etc cause ozone to be formed lower down in the atmosphere which is not where it naturally belongs. This is a further cause of the recent global warming we are experiencing, again entirely down as a by-product of the burning of fossil fuels. The following link provides a relatively easy to understand explanation for an otherwise complex set of processes: https://www.reading.ac.uk/news/2025/Research-News/Ozone-will-warm-planet-more-than-first-thought.
So, in net terms, I think we can safely say that, in one way or another, this greenhouse gas is contributing to global warming in the troposphere as a direct result of mankind’s activity on Mother Earth.
Scriptural Arguments for The Destruction of Mankind Through Climate Change
Well, that is enough science; let us now have a look at what the scriptures have to tell us on the subject of global warming. God gave the Earth to mankind to inhabit at a particular point in geological time. I think it would be somewhat disingenuous of Jehovah to destroy that Earth by a divinely engineered cyclical catastrophic climate change while man was still inhabiting the planet He gave us. That sounds more like what I would expect from Satan:
16 The heavens are the heavens of Jehovah; But the earth hath he given to the children of men. (Psalms 115 ASV)
God promises that those destroying the earth will get their just deserts. So, we have a prophecy that it is only when we are effectively capable of destroying our planet through global warming, pollution of the land, seas and air as well as a result of nuclear fall-out and man-made plagues that He will make His judgement on mankind. Whilst there are clearly several ways in which mankind is destroying the earth, there is no doubt in my mind that man-made global warming is one of those ways:
18 And the nations were full of wrath; and Your wrath came, and the time of the judging of the dead, and to give the reward to Your slaves, to the prophets, and to the saints, and to the ones fearing Your name, to the small and to the great, and to destroy those destroying the earth. (Revelation 11 GLT)
Now God destroyed mankind Himself in Noah’s time by effectively making the planet completely uninhabitable by the flood:
11 And the earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.
12 And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupted. For all flesh had corrupted its way on the earth.
13 And God said to Noah, The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them. And behold, I will destroy them along with the earth. (Genesis 6 GLT)
That was a prophecy from the past, but we also have a promise for our own future:
6 Howl! For the day of Jehovah [is] at hand. It shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. (Isaiah 13 GLT)
7 And when I shall extinguish thee, I will cover the heavens, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light.
8 All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord Jehovah. (Ezekiel 32 ASV)
30 And I will give signs in the heavens and in the earth: blood, and fire, and columns of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of Jehovah. (Joel 2 GLT)
19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: (Acts 2 KJV)
Like the flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, mankind will be left in no doubt that the day of Jehovah has come:
24 Then Jehovah rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Jehovah out of heaven;
25 and he overthrew those cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. (Genesis 19 ASV)
28 and he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the Plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace. (Genesis 19 ASV)
Mankind’s final destruction will not be from God’s creation of a slow burn climatological cycle to take us all out over a period of years. It will be a clear and unequivocal message that mankind’s final destruction will be from Him on the day of judgement. If we destroy ourselves by any means, including our own causation of global warming, where would that place the day of Jehovah? It would become a meaningless notion from which mankind will learn nothing about the power of God. There are many scriptures that attest to this, so we need to take this prophesy of God’s destructive power seriously. Below I provide a plentiful supply of examples:
12 For there shall be a day of Jehovah of hosts upon all that is proud and haughty, and upon all that is lifted up; and it shall be brought low; (Isaiah 2 ASV)
9 Behold, the day of Jehovah cometh, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger; to make the land a desolation, and to destroy the sinners thereof out of it. (Isaiah 13 ASV)
13 Therefore I will make the heavens to tremble, and the earth shall be shaken out of its place, in the wrath of Jehovah of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. (Isaiah 13 ASV)
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.
19 The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is shaken violently.
20 The earth shall stagger like a drunken man, and shall sway to and fro like a hammock; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Jehovah will punish the host of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. (Isaiah 24 ASV)
31 A noise shall come even to the end of the earth; for Jehovah hath a controversy with the nations; he will enter into judgment with all flesh: as for the wicked, he will give them to the sword, saith Jehovah. (Jeremiah 25 ASV)
19 They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be as an unclean thing; their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of Jehovah: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels; because it hath been the stumblingblock of their iniquity. (Ezekiel 7 ASV)
3 For the day is near, even the day of Jehovah is near; it shall be a day of clouds, a time of the nations. (Ezekiel 30 ASV)
18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of Jehovah's wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he will make an end, yea, a terrible end, of all them that dwell in the land. (Zephaniah 1 ASV)
1 For, behold, the day cometh, it burneth as a furnace; and all the proud, and all that work wickedness, shall be stubble; and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith Jehovah of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. (Malachi 4 ASV)
37 And as [were] the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man.
38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,
39 and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man. (Matthew 24 ASV)
7 but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. (2 Peter 3 ASV)
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up. (2 Peter 3 ASV)
15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men. (Revelation 9 KJV)
18 and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunders; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since there were men upon the earth, so great an earthquake, so mighty.
19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and Babylon the great was remembered in the sight of God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.
20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
21 And great hail, [every stone] about the weight of a talent, cometh down out of heaven upon men: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof is exceeding great. (Revelation 16 ASV)
Luke makes it crystal clear, in his Gospel, that the revealing of the risen Christ will be made for all the evil ones, in the final day’s global Sodom, to see before their ultimate demise
28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;
29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. (Luke 17)
Now, according to Abraham's delightful conversation with Jehovah, our God was clearly unable to find even ten righteous ones in the total population of Sodom:
32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake. (Genesis 18)
This will again be the same in today's Sodom. Of today's world population of 8.3 billion, 6.2 billion righteous ones will be raptured out of harm's way and 2.1 billion unrighteous ones (with not even ten righteous among their number) will be physically killed at God’s apocalypse. I calculated this based on the Lords’ Witnesses understanding at http://www.truebiblecode.com/understanding43.html.
So, again I would argue, from all these Scriptures, that global warming has not been caused by our God and therefore must be a man-made phenomenon. For those interested, some of the above material can be found back in my end-times papers (Signs of The End Times – Part 2) although the context is rather different.
Scriptural Diversion
I thought it best to open a new section here since my scriptural research into God’s part in determining mankind’s diet caused me to take my usual significant scriptural diversion as you will shortly discover. Initially God intended mankind to have a vegetarian diet while in the Garden of Eden:
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food: (Genesis 1 ASV)
This continued after Adam’s expulsion from Eden albeit with harder to grow produce from the ground:
17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed [is] the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat [of] it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; (Genesis 3 KJV)
But then there seemed to be a change without any overt decree from God to confirm this. Abel, Adam’s younger son and favoured by Jehovah over his elder brother Cain, was described as a shepherd of flocks in the Greens translation. The Hebrew word 'צֹאן' for flock can apply to sheep or goats but, for the sake of this narrative, it does not make too much difference. Whilst sheep (or goats) can be kept for a variety of reasons, the main ones would seem to be for their wool, hides, dairy products and meat:
2 And she continued to bear his brother, Abel. And Abel became a shepherd of flocks. And Cain became a tiller of the ground. (GLT)
3 And in the end of days, it happened that Cain brought an offering to Jehovah from the fruit of the ground. (GLT)
3וַיְהִי, מִקֵּץ יָמִים; וַיָּבֵא קַיִן מִפְּרִי הָאֲדָמָה, מִנְחָה--לַיהוָה. (MM)
4 And Abel brought, he also, from the firstlings of his flocks, even from their fat. And Jehovah looked to Abel and to his offering. (Genesis 4 GLT)
(Genesis 4 MM)
I found it interesting that God favoured the shepherd of flocks over the tiller of the ground. From this, one might argue that God favoured a meat-eating diet over a vegetarian one. However, I believe that His favour was really made based on a comparison of the two brothers’ characters. If we consider the wording of verse 4 above, it appears that Abel made a sacrificial offering to God of the pick of his flock as dictated much later on in the Book of Numbers and confirmed in Paul’s letter to the Hebrews:
17 But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savor unto Jehovah. (Numbers 18 ASV)
4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had witness borne to him that he was righteous, God bearing witness in respect of his gifts: and through it he being dead yet speaketh. (Hebrews 11 ASV)
Furthermore, in antediluvian times, we are told that Jabal fathered a race that lived a pastoral life that included the raising of cattle:
20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents and [have] cattle. (Genesis 4 ASV)
It is noteworthy that Noah also sacrificed burnt offerings to Jehovah after exiting from the ark. Whilst this again seems to be without any explicit decree from God, I think there is an implicit understanding in that God tells Noah to include more clean animals in the ark than would be necessary to replenish the Earth:
1 And Jehovah said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee seven and seven, the male and his female; and of the beasts that are not clean two, the male and his female: (Genesis 7 ASV)
20 And Noah builded an altar unto Jehovah, and took of every clean beast, and of every clean bird, and offered burnt-offerings on the altar.
21 And Jehovah smelled the sweet savor; and Jehovah said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake, for that the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more everything living, as I have done. (Genesis 8 ASV)
If one moves forward to the giving of the Law, we then see that Aaron and his priesthood were required to partake of the burnt offering for food after the sacrifice had been made to God:
25 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin-offering: in the place where the burnt-offering is killed shall the sin-offering be killed before Jehovah: it is most holy.
26 The priest that offereth it for sin shall eat it: in a holy place shall it be eaten, in the court of the tent of meeting. (Leviticus 6 ASV)
So, I think that that must already have been custom and practice in antediluvial times albeit without it being written explicitly in scripture until the giving of the Law of Moses. It is only after Noah and his family exited the ark that God explicitly states in Scripture that mankind can eat animals:
3 Every moving thing that liveth shall be food for you; As the green herb have I given you all. (Genesis 9 ASV)
So why did God wait until this point to make a scripturally recorded edict on eating animals? Well, during their time in the ark they must have been only able to eat plant food that they had gathered beforehand. The clean beasts that had been loaded onto the Ark were for the sacrifice, not for eating during the flood.
This was God’s request to Noah to provision his family and the animals, after loading all the animals. Although it does not explicitly state that only plant-life was to be used as food, I think there is a strong implication that was the case. I can imagine killing and cooking animal food, in front of all the animals that were to be saved in the ark, would not have been a very good start to replenishing the Earth:
21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather [it] to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them. (Genesis 6 KJV)
It is probably also worth looking at God’s feeding of the Israelites in the wilderness. He fed them with manna from heaven which was effectively a vegetarian food:
24 And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. (Psalms 78 KJV)
7 And the manna was like coriander seed, and the appearance thereof as the appearance of bdellium. (Numbers 11 ASV)
But the Israelites complained that they felt they were being starved even compared to their time as slaves in Egypt:
3 and the children of Israel said unto them, Would that we had died by the hand of Jehovah in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh-pots, when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. (Exodus 16 ASV)
Consequently, God provided them with quails to eat to provide a fuller and more balanced diet in their eyes:
8 And Moses said, [This shall be], when Jehovah shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that Jehovah heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against Jehovah. (Exodus 16 ASV)
40 [The people] asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. (Psalms 105 KJV)
So, again, in this case it seems that God’s preference was for man to have a vegetarian diet but did not prevent them from eating the flesh of animals. So again, I think God was somewhat ambivalent on the matter of man’s diet.
God seems to have required me to go through this whole rigmarole for two purposes. This diversion was to demonstrate to me (and my readers) that not every dot and comma of God’s Word is included in the Bible. Some things must be logically arrived at by mankind in studying the scriptures that have been recorded to determine the whole story of those that have not. God is not spoon-feeding us with His Word. He wants us to think for ourselves as to the full meaning of any scriptural account.
Well, that is the diversion over and done with! The point of all the above, for the specific purpose of this climate change paper, was to determine God’s role in mankind’s eating of the flesh of animals. This necessitates the keeping of farm animals which is a heavy generator of methane and nitrous oxide gas. God would have known that, by the start of the 21st century towards the present day, we would have a world population of some 8.3 billion human souls. Anyway, regardless of diet, the farming requirement to feed this many would produce global warming levels of methane and nitrous oxide.
So, what is my point? My point is that the increase in the current methane and nitrous oxide levels is clearly due to man-made farming activities but that God knew this would contribute to global warming to a prospectively catastrophic level at this time. So why did He allow this? Well, He knew that there would be many other of man’s activities that could bring about the end of the world (Signs of The End Times – Part 2) so what was the point of preparing a home for mankind that was not going to be able to cater for a population of that magnitude? Whatever we want to say about global warming, I think this one item alone tells me that it is solely due to mankind’s activities and is not the product of a catastrophic cyclical climate change which would solely be an act of God and not of man.
If needed, there is effectively a clear statement of this in the scriptures. The Earth was created in six symbolic days followed by the Sabbath day. Peter, in his second letter, describes each day as a thousand years. As we are seeing events unfold, it is also clear that the Earth will cease to exist after 6 millennia prior to the thousand-year Sabbath of the Kingdom of God. This was pre-ordained by God who knew beforehand how long it would take mankind to destroy his home planet and himself:
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. (Genesis 2 KJV)
8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day [is] with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (2 Peter 3 KJV)
Conclusion
Overall, it seems that all the gases referred to in this paper contribute to global warming. Despite certain claims, carbon dioxide still comes out as the main culprit however due to its large increase in the atmosphere since industrial times and the effect of its long life. Once an excess of carbon dioxide is created, that is more than the natural carbon sink can remove, it just continues to increase in volumetric concentration as mankind continues to add to it. The following website gives a highly comprehensive view in comparing the relative effects of the various greenhouse gases on global warming: https://sciencenotes.org/greenhouse-gases-definition-types-and-environmental-impact/.
So, having carried out what I consider to be a comprehensive review of the causes of the current global warming, together with the scriptural evidence, I am now even more firmly of the view that it is totally down to man-made activity on the Earth and has zero relation to any God-made cyclical climate change. Amen.
